Guidelines for Computer and Data Protection

If the National Weather Service issues a hurricane warning, employees will be advised to secure their work areas and evacuate the building. Each department’s Hurricane Preparedness Coordinator will oversee its emergency preparedness activities by asking employees to do the following tasks:

- Re-locate the backup diskettes and/or tapes to a secure, off-site area.
- Unplug all Personal Computer equipment and any attached hardware. Cover these items with plastic wrap and move them away from the windows and off the floors. Plastic wrap will be available by the elevators on each floor at Headquarters and will be distributed by Building Administration.
Peripheral Equipment
- Power down and unplug all terminals, printers, remote controllers and modems.
- Cover each piece of equipment individually with plastic wrap, labeling it with your workspace address.
- Remove all power strips and surge protectors from the floor.
- Unplug all other equipment and move them away from the windows.
- Use your best judgment to decide where the equipment should be stored.
Other
- Unplug all electrical equipment, cover them with plastic wrap and move them away from the windows.
